Selecting Bridesmaids’ Dresses with a Pregnant Bridesmaid

When you first started planning your wedding you probably did not consider that one or more of your bridesmaids might be pregnant by your wedding date. While inconvenient, you will probably be pleased for your friend if this happens, but may be worried about how you will accommodate her pregnancy in your wedding plans. Matching bridesmaids’ dresses can be difficult when one bridesmaid is rather different in shape than the others.

Fortunately there are lots of options available to accommodate the pregnant bridesmaid. You may have to somewhat adjust your plans, but with a bit of creativity you can still end up with a lovely set of bridesmaids who look great with your wedding décor.

The first option to consider is allowing each bridesmaid to wear different gowns made from matching fabrics. You can offer each bridesmaid a sample of the cloth you would like them to match and a basic concept of the style you would like them to wear. For example, you might want the ladies to dress in light blue velvet and would prefer the dresses to be mid-calf in length, with long sleeves and a V neckline. From these directions each bridesmaid can find a dress that they are comfortable in and match the color scheme of your wedding.

Another idea is to find a set of bridesmaid separates that suit your wedding. By making the top and bottom halves separate this allows the pregnant bridesmaid get a stretchy belly section added to her bottoms so that she will fit it as her pregnancy progresses. If you do try this, you may want to select a top half that is longer in length so that it will cover up the stretchy belly and keep the overall look uniform.

If you prefer a traditional bridesmaid dress, many designers offer matching dresses in maternity cuts. Another option is to buy a larger sized dress and have it custom fitted to your pregnant friend. Be sure that the final fitting is as close as possible to your wedding day as a pregnant woman changes shape and size quite quickly, especially in the later months of pregnancy.

Keep in mind that it does not pay to try to cover up a pregnancy with large bows or extra material. These additions only make a woman look larger than she really is and will accentuate her pregnancy rather than covering it up.

Talk to you bridesmaids and let them be involved in selecting the bridesmaids dresses as much as you can. It is never nice to have a dress that has no future usefulness, so choosing something that can be worn to other events in the future is a bonus to any bridesmaid, pregnant or not. They will thank you for considering their needs in their wardrobe, and you will have a happier set of bridesmaids to enjoy at your wedding.
